Wavelength of UVA; of mares and roses

All of the following visual mnemonic relies on the Major Number System. Someday, I’ll dedicate a post to this, but for now, I’d advise review of Wikipedia and YouTube for a helpful introduction. Understanding this system is critical to understanding the association between numbers and their symbols.

Now on to the players for these scenes:

  • 315 nm: Metal
  • 340 nm: Mare(s) as in “horse”
  • 400 nm: Roses
  • 1: HAT
  • 2: HEN

UVA-2 (315–340 nm): THE METAL MARE

Note the hen in this scene (hens are my recurring symbol for the number 2). She is nuzzling a metal (315) mare (34*). Collectively these represent the wavelengths of UVA-2 specifically.

UVA-1 (340-400 nm): THE MARE’S GARDEN PARTY

A trio of lovely mares (340) in their best hats (1) enjoying a spritz of limeade in the roses (400), being especially careful not to spill as UVA-1 is the wavelength implicated in phytophotodermatitis and many other pathologic light reactions such as PMLE. Perhaps another good reason to have their Sunday best hats on… UVA-1 has deeper penetration than UVA-2 and can be used as phototherapy for conditions like deep morphea.
